Born in Cleveland, Ohio, USA, Kitaj studied at the Cooper Union Institute in New York in 1950-1 and 1952. As a merchant seaman in the early 1950s he visited Havana, Mexico and South America. He was a student at the Academy of Fine Art, Vienna in 1951. He attended the Ruskin School, Oxford in 1958-9, and the Royal College of Art from 1959 to 1961.

R.B. Kitaj was born in Cleveland, Ohio, USA. He enjoyed an extensive period in academia during the 1950s, first studying at the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, New York from 1950-51, then returning in 1952. He spent time in the Merchant Navy in 1951 also attending the Academy of Fine Art, Vienna.

After the death of the painter R. B. Kitaj, in 2007, the Jewish Museum Berlin held the first wide-ranging show of his life's work from autumn 2012 to early 2013. The traveling retrospective – 14 years after the preceding Kitaj retrospective – thoroughly represented each period of his extensive oeuvre with around 130 paintings, prints, and drawings.

Unusually for a painter, Kitaj took direct inspiration from literature, going so far in the case of Cracks and Reforms and Bursts in the Violet Air as to compose the entire picture as if it were a (concrete) poem in its own right, or as a cryptogram, in which succeeding images have to be read and decoded in order for the final meaning to emerge.
